Low fat, no fat, low carb, no carb, high protein, low protein, eat this, not that. Ughhhh! Don’t you feel overwhelmed by all the latest “diet” crazes? We live in a world of information overload and unfortunately a lot of it is crap. It’s no wonder that 37% of US adults are considered obese and millions more are overweight! Here’s the dealio……DIETS DON’T WORK! It is only when we decide to make a DECISION to adopt a healthy lifestyle that we discover the shape our bodies were meant to have. In my twenties I experienced being four different sizes and have tried everything from the soup diet to living on diet soda. It was a long and painful road and I had a lot of setbacks. For me, it came down to glorifying God which also means treating my body with love, forgiveness, and respect.
I’m not saying I don’t have a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup every now and then but 99% of the time the foods entering my body are real foods made from ingredients found on earth. First, let’s talk about what we should NOT be eating. Chances are if you cannot pronounce the ingredient, then do not put it in your body. It is likely an artificial flavor or additive that has been put in the product to extend shelf-life. When you think about it, doesn’t that sound a little crazy to you? Food was intended to be eaten fresh not loaded with preservatives to keep it from spoiling. If you see ingredients like BHT, BHA, TBHQ, Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), Aspartame, and sodium benzonate, just to name a few, don’t eat it. Second, stay away from high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). It is a very common sweetener found in a variety of packaged foods and sodas. Since it has become popular amongst food manufacturers, levels of obesity have increased. There are a host of reasons to not consume HFCS. One of them is that HFCS is always found in low quality, nutritionally bankrupt foods. They are filled with other disease promoting compounds, fats, salt, chemicals, and even mercury.
You may be thinking, well this is great Mindy, but what should we be eating? My short answer is if God made it, then eat it. Whole fruits, grains, vegetables, eggs, legumes, nuts, meats, and fish are what we were designed to consume. Our bodies were not designed to process chemicals. For a jump start, check out my 10 Day Flat Belly which was specifically designed to reduce inflammation and reset your metabolism. If you are feeling overwhelmed don’t. Pick just one thing to quit and if you are a soda drinker, may I suggest starting here. I haven’t had a soda in 10 years and I honestly do not miss it. It may be difficult at first, but your health is worth the temporary sacrifice.
With love and respect,
