Your Exposure to Toxins
Unless you live in a bubble, there is no way to avoid exposure to toxins. We consume them in our food, the air we breathe, household cleaners, shampoo, cosmetics, etc. Toxins are everywhere! According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), women are exposed to an average of 168 chemicals on their bodies every single day! Whoa!!
So Now What Do I Do?
Don’t fret now beautiful. You can take many precautions to lessen the toxic overload. Before I get into the foods you can start eating to help eliminate toxins in your body, here are two things you can start doing today to decrease toxic exposure.
- Start using chemical free cosmetics and skincare. I’ve done this for years and there are some really great brands out there. My absolute favorite cosmetic brand is Mineral Fusion. I’ve never been disappointed in any of their products. I’ve also recently tried Maskara and am happy with it. It’s a little heavy for my day to day, but is great for full coverage. I REALLY like the blush and the pricing is super reasonable. I use a variety of skincare brands including Mineral Fusion and Burt’s Bees. Right now, I am using the Mineral Fusion overnight renewal kit before bed and in the morning, I cleanse with Burt’s Bees cleansing oil and follow with Burt’s Bees Renewal Day Firming Lotion with SPF 30. At the very least purchase items that say paraben and phthalate free. They are both hormone disruptors that you should be avoiding.
- Start using natural household cleaners. With today’s choices, this is soooo easy to do! Any grocery store carries at least one natural brand. A couple of my favorites are Mrs. Meyers and Method. Or, if you have the time and want to channel your inner scientist, you can make your own cleaners with common household items like vinegar. Just head to YouTube for how to videos.
So, these are two very simple things you can start doing today. I know you are probably thinking “but I really love my cosmetic brand even though it is filled with chemicals”. Let me just remind you that your skin is your largest organ. Whatever you are using on your skin is getting absorbed into your body. You wouldn’t eat a spoonful of chemicals, so why put it on your body?
Eat These Detoxifying Foods
You’ve stayed with me this long so now let’s talk about one of my favorite subjects- FOOD! Here are five foods that will help eliminate toxins from your precious body.
Lemon Water- Citrus fruits are rich in the antioxidant de-limonene, a powerful compound found in the peel that stimulates liver enzymes to help flush toxins from the body and gives sluggish bowels a kick, according to the World Health Organization.
Dark green vegetables such as kale and spinach contain a powerful substance chlorophyll. Chlorophyll rids the body of harmful environmental toxins and aid in liver detoxification. Start eating more spinach salads and adding a handful of spinach or kale to your daily smoothie.
Garlic- This potent vegetable stimulates the liver into producing detoxification enzymes that filter toxic residues from the digestive system. Try adding to sautéed veggies, chicken marinades, and pasta sauce.
Green tea- You probably already know that green tea is filled with antioxidants. It also helps flush toxins from your body due to a special type of antioxidant called catechins. These are known to increase liver function.
Omega 3 oils- By using oils such as hemp, avocado, olive, or flaxseed, you will help lubricate the intestinal walls. This allows toxins to be absorbed by the oil and eliminated by the body. Start making your own salad dressings with these oils. All you need are lemons, balsamic vinegar, and sea salt to get started with!
Ok dearest, there you have it- natural ways to start detoxifying your body. And if you are feeling overwhelmed, don’t! Pick 1-3 things to start with, like switching your make-up brand and adding a spinach salad to your daily routine. Once you’ve developed a couple of new healthy habits, then knock off a couple more things on the list. You’ve got this and your well-being is worth it!!
With love and respect,
